Girl Power: Toys to Empower Young Girls

The girls toy section looks a lot different from years in the past.

There's less of a focus on colors and more on careers and creativity.

"The toy aisle is not quite as pink as it used to be," toy insider Laurie Schact said. "There's so many other things that are inspiring and empowering our girls."

On the top of our toy expert's list, gifts that are super-powered.

"I love how they look, their bodies are made athletic, muscular, strong, letting girls know that's how they can be," Schact said. "DC Super Hero Girls Action Figures" are the superheroes we've known for years, in teenage form. It's about the fact that girls can be powerful and can be strong, so it's a great message we're getting."

Elena of Avalor is the newest Disney princess, and the first Latin-American princess. But she doesn't sit in a castle, she goes on adventures that teach her how to be a great leader.

"She really affects change, she goes on great adventures and her music makes things better," Schact said.

Doc McStuffins is a Disney character who wants to be a doctor just like her mom. The toy comes with a cart to help get into character fixing toys and dolls just like Doc.

"We can do an EKG over here, we just have everything that we need," said Schact.

Then there are the engineering toys that were once geared toward only boys. Not anymore. This building set from K'NEX lets kids construct the stage and film their own movie.

"This is also a holder for your iPhone or any smart device, so now you can actually take stop motion animation as well. We have moving parts in here, we have our curtains, we have different screens in the back so it's really a great kit," Schact said.

So consider stepping out of the box this season with some toys sure to strengthen and inspire a young girl.
